5 Things to Do This Weekend

Here's a look at what's going on around town from Jan. 28 to 30.

Greater Annapolis Patch has some suggestions for what to do this weekend. Our top five events include the Step Competition at Annapolis Middle School (AMS), the 15th Annual Polar Bear Plunge, the Junior League of Annapolis event at Whole Foods, 13th Annual Battle of the Bands and the winter farmers market at Westfield Annapolis mall.

1. On Friday night, the First Impression Step Squad presents the third annual step squad competition at 7 p.m. in the main gym of AMS. Don't miss the talented students from AMS and other areas. Cost for tickets is $6 at the door.

2. The Polar Bear Plunge takes place on Saturday, starting around 8 a.m. at Sandy Point State Park to benefit the Maryland Special Olympics. For the schedule of events, check here and enjoy the festivities. If you don't want to plunge but wish to help a good cause, check out the volunteer opportunities here.

3. The JLA will sponsor an event on Saturday to promote healthy eating at the Whole Foods Market in the Annapolis Towne Centre at Parole. The "Kids in the Kitchen" event, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., will include food tastings, easy-to-make cooking demonstrations, healthy recipes, shopping guides, and tips from a registered dietician.

4. High school bands from around the county will do battle on Saturday at 5 p.m. as the Battle of the Bands takes place at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts in downtown Annapolis. Proceeds for this event go to the music department of the winning school. Show your support for "The Banned" from Annapolis High!

5. Have you been curious about the winter farmers market held at Westfield Annapolis mall? See what it's all about on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the first floor of the Nordstrom parking garage. The winter market will be ongoing in this location until April 17, held on the first and third Sundays. Items for sale include winter produce, beef, chicken, pork, eggs, winter greens, baked goods, honey, herbal products, jams and soaps. For more information, contact Brenda Conti at 410-349-0317 or see the website.
