Alderman Paone Eyeing Mayoral Run?

Annapolis City Council's only Republican was cryptic about his ambitions, but he's raising significant amounts of money in preparation for the 2013 election.

Alderman Fred Paone (R-2nd Ward) said he's raised nearly double what he spent to win his seat on City Council in 2009, with more than a year to go until Election Day in Annapolis.

According to a report of campaign donors released by the city on Friday, Paone raised $10,599 during the last fiscal year, putting his total fundraising for the 2013 election at $16,680.70.

Paone said he spent somewhere between $8,000 to $10,000 in the 2009 election.

He's also the only council member to have raised any money this year, aside from Shelia Finlayson (D-4th Ward), whose campaign earned $165.17 for the period ending June 24.

Annapolis Patch asked Paone if these facts are an indication that he's considering a run for mayor.

Paone's answer: "I'm certainly weighing various options."

He added that being the lone Republican alderman on council means he needs to be prepared for a number of challenges.

"If I want to get more Republicans elected to council, I might need to raise more money," Paone said. "I'm considering a lot of things right now."

If Paone is serious about taking on Mayor Josh Cohen next fall, he will need to step up his fundraising efforts.

Mayor Cohen’s re-eleciton campaign raised $33,475 during the 2012 fiscal year.

Cohen also raised $61,434 during the 2009 election, which was well above any other candidate at the time, according to the Capital Gazette.

With more than a year to go until the 2013 election, Cohen is on pace to break his previous record. So far, he has raised a total of $41,303.54.

Here's how much other City Council members have on hand at the moment:

Alderman Richard Israel (D-1st Ward) raised nothing in 2012, but has $6,232.36 left over from previous fundraising.

Alderwoman Classie Hoyle (D-3rd Ward) raised nothing in 2012, but has $3,444.50 left over from previous fundraising.

Alderwoman Shelia Finlayson (D-4th Ward) raised $165.17 in 2012 and has a total of $982.22.

Alderman Matthew Silverman (D-5th Ward) raised nothing in 2012, but has $1,134.17 left over from previous fundraising.

No report was filed online for Alderman Kenneth Kirby (D-6th Ward).

Alderman Ian Pfeiffer (D-7th Ward) raised nothing in 2012, but has $3,570.93 left over from previous fundraising.

Alderman Ross Arnett (D-8th Ward) raised nothing in 2012, but has $1,856.70 left over from previous fundraising.
