Annapolis Middle Educator Nominated for Teacher of the Year

The public school system and the Annapolis and Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce is honoring the educators, then will pick the county's top teacher.

Emily Miller, an art teacher at Annapolis Middle School, is among 50 educators nominated to be honored as Teachers of the Year in the Anne Arundel County at an upcoming banquet.

Anne Arundel County Public Schools and the Annapolis and Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce selected 47 public school teachers and three private school teachers to appear at the Excellence in Education event on April 16.

“I look forward to this process every year because it gives us all a chance to celebrate the great teaching that goes on throughout our school system,” Superintendent Kevin Maxwell said in an email. “Every day in our classrooms, our teachers are creating brighter futures not just for our children, but for all of us. It is thrilling to be able to spotlight that in this way.”

One public school teacher and one private school teacher will be selected as the top in the county, with the public school winner eligible for Maryland Teacher of the Year honors.

Last year's public school winner was Laura Groo of Southern Middle School, who went on to be a Maryland Teacher of the Year finalist.

Teachers are our most important resource in the county. I want to congratulate each of the nominees and remind them that the Grants 4 Teachers Fund is available for all AA County Teachers who have creative ideas for reaching our children. Applications are available at http://www.cfaac.org/non-profits/grants4teachers/ All of us can contribute to this fund also to show our support teachers in our county.

Congratulations to Ms. Miller! Annapolis Middle School is full of talented, energetic and hard-working teachers. Their job is not an easy one, and we parents are often quick to find fault and slow to recognize the challenges public school teachers face every day.

Thanks to Ms. Miller and all of the other terrific folks at AMS.
