Baby Born On Side of I-97

A mother delivered a healthy baby boy en route to the hospital Monday night.

A mother delivered a baby boy in her car on Interstate 97 Monday evening, as she was unable to make it to the hospital in time, fire officials said.

Battalion Chief Steve Thompson of the Anne Arundel County Fire Department said the newborn arrived at about 7 p.m. on I-97 near Farm Road in the Crownsville area. He said the baby was delivered in the back seat of a Toyota Avalon, with the assistance of a man believed to be the boy's father.

The baby was delivered before emergency crews could arrive at the scene.

An ambulance took the baby and mother to Anne Arundel Medical Center, where both are believed to be doing well, Thompson said.
