Anne Arundel County Councilman Chris Trumbauer (D-6th District) introduced Olivia Simmons at Tuesday night's meeting, acknowledging her for her recent victory in the 2012 county spelling bee.

"I don't remember what the word was, but I know it was hard to pronounce," Trumbauer said.

It was "Damoclean"—an adjective that refers to Damocles who spoke in extravagant terms of Dionysius’ happiness and was then invited to a banquet and made to sit underneath a sword suspended by a hair to demonstrate the precarious position of people in power.

Trumbauer was joined by Councilman Jerry Walker (R-7th District) since Olivia attends Bates Middle School in District 6, but she lives in District 7 in Crofton.

"This is a county council citation," Trumbauer said. "It's presented to Olivia Simmons for being the first place winner of the 2012 Anne Arundel County Spelling Bee in recognition of your personal achievement through your participation in such a challenging competition.

"Congratulations on this outstanding accomplishment and best wishes at the 2012 Scripps National Spelling Bee in May."
