Sometimes a true love story has a way of bringing people together.

That was the case Saturday afternoon when even severe weather couldn’t keep the community away from cheering on a couple celebrating 65 years of marriage.

All week Tiffany Owens, owner of Annapolis Shirt Company on Main Street, had been spreading the word about her plan to surprise her grandparents, John and Jackie Roman. The couple met when John was stationed in Jackie's hometown of Charleville, France, during World War II.

Handmade signs were available in the store for people to hold and some were even written in French in honor of Jackie.

The couple received citations signed by members of the Maryland House of Delegates, Sen. John C. Astle (D-Annapolis), Mayor Joshua J. Cohen and Gov. Martin O’Malley, Owens said.

At exactly 12:45 p.m. a World War II Jeep with a “Just Married” sign tied to the back of it made its way up Main Street. John and Jackie Roman were all smiles waving and blowing kisses as they passed enthusiastic sign holders, many complete strangers.

A veil—made by her daughter to resemble the wedding-day veil that was made out of goose feathers because money was tight after the war—could be seen in Jackie’s lap as she snuggled next to her World War II veteran and Purple Heart recipient. After 65 years of marriage, he was still the dapper gentleman and she was his blushing bride.

I will pass along this message to them! Thank you for coming out in the rain. My Grandma said she kept shouting to everyone to get out of the rain! :-) They truly felt so honored and it will be a memory to last a lifetime!
