Volunteers from around Annapolis celebrated Dr. Seuss' birthday on Friday at Eastport Elementary by reading some of the author's best-known and much-loved stories.

The readers wore the immediately identifiable red-and-white hat from The Cat in the Hat, and there was even a visit from the Grinch.

The event was in conjunction with Read Across America and featured Carol Sisco, the daughter of the founder of Reading is Fundamental (RIF), the largest children’s literacy nonprofit in the United States.

"We prepare and motivate children to read by delivering free books and literacy resources to those children and families who need them most," Karen Garczynski, reading specialist at Eastport Elementary, said in an email.
