Man Critically Injured at Car Wash

A 45-year-old suffered serious, life-threatening injuries after being struck by a car that crashed through the front window at Maritime Car Wash.

A 45-year-old man suffered serious, life-threatening injuries after being struck by a car at the Maritime Car Wash at 2473 Solomon's Island Rd. at approximately 11 a.m. Saturday, according to the Anne Arundel County Fire Department.

"I was sitting there alongside the window, and it sounded like a bomb went off," said an eyewitness. "It threw glass back at least 15 feet across the room."

A black GMC Acadia reportedly crashed through the car wash's front window and pressed the man between an aluminum support and the vehicle. Another woman managed to run out of the way in time.

"It was one of the most upsetting things I have ever seen," the witness said.

The witness said that a Maritime employee was driving the vehicle, but Maritime did not answer Patch's call for confirmation.

Lt. Keith Hamilton said the man was taken by helicopter with serious life-threatening injuries to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.

Not shocking. Their other location did $3,000 worth of damage to my wife's car when one of their employees floored her Jeep when moving it to the drying area. It hit another car but fortunately no one was injured. They tried to tell her it was a defect with her car, not the fact that the driver hit the gas pedal too hard. When AACO PD showed up the workers scattered and the owners said they had no idea where the employee who was driving went. Officers later found the guy in their manager's office.

This was sooo scary and unfortunate ...me my mother and daughter were in the lobby area...and what I found comforting in the midst of this drama was how the customers came together to assist and console and support the victims of this scenario....I hope Annapolis Patch keeps us updated on the man getting back to good health and hope maritime rethinks the layout of their business as well as makes sure they are in compliance with their employees handling vehicle opperations...feel really sorry for the boy who drove that car too....

Kevin the victim of todays human error accident is fighting for his life at U of Md shock trauma. The car wash remained open after this tragedy. I am Kevin's brother and it is 730 pm. They are still working on my brother. Does anyone know the managers / owners name that thought best to keep this public danger open? I would like a word with this person. Please pray for Kevin.

I hope they check the brakes on that vehicle. It was most likely human error, but GM has had a lot of issues with corroded/rusted brake lines and NTSB has been studying the issue for more than a year. GM asserts that brake failure will not occur without advance warning, specifically a warning light on the dashboard. From my own experience, there was no warning light and the brakes failed suddenly and completely on my vehicle twice. My neighbor had the same experience two weeks ago and was unable to stop at an intersection. My cousin had that problem last month. It might be unrelated in this instance, but if you have a truck made by GM, for your own safety, have someone examine the metal brake lines.

No brakes could not have caused it. Without the gas, the vehicle would likely lack force to go through all of that. Possible mashing the gas, instead of the brake, or thinking the vehicle was in reverse instead of drive. Regardless of what happened, I don't think the business is a public danger. Accidents do happen. If the place was well known of being a danger, Kevin would not have been there, I would guess.

My car was damaged there as well about a year ago. They, including the manager were very rude and tried to tell me that they did nothing wrong and that my car's drivers seat was damaged before I went there. One would think I would have noticed since I was sitting on that seat when I drove there. Take pictures of your car every time before you go there! If something happens, they will not take responsibility but keep backing up each others lies.

Accident is without intent or planning, which I'm sure there was none. They do happen, regardless of what caused it; the definition is what it is. While there may be errors or irresponsibility that can occur, an accident is a part of life. In America, though, we always look to arrest / sue / destroy / blame something or someone to a higher than reasonable level of situation. Sad we can say we pray but forget to forgive.

I would think that several heavy duty concrete filled metal posts should be installed to protect customer waiting areas from such a threat. If such an accident is to be expected, then why wouldn't such a business install the same protections that other facility designs employ to barricade against run away vehicles?

Agenda? You make it like we have some sort of diabolical plan. The point everyone you mentioned was trying to make was that Maritime's drivers are not careful with the way they are handling cars at their business. Their worker's carelessness has caused accidents in the past but up until this point those accidents had fortunately not injured anyone (that I know of). It's a shame for Kevin that this happened and hopefully he will recover quickly and fully.

Mike, I am not sure how you interpreted “agenda” as “diabolical plan”. You clearly have your own motivation for your original post, but I never said it was diabolical. I just do not believe that this is the time or the place to do anything else but show support for his family. I cannot begin to imagine what his family must be going though. At least in your comment to my post, you finally did show support.

Not sure how long lines, objects being stolen and "illegal" immigrants have anything to do with this poor man’s life? Maybe you all should get your priorities together and share positivity in a time of negativity. Regardless of what any individual says the 15 of you bashing the business will not over throw the other thousands of people in the community supporting the business. The owners must have paid off the civil engineers of AACO or they are just incompetent. It is a severe endangerment to traffic to have the line for this place back up onto RT 2. Just for this reason i have boycotted this place since the minute it opened. I am also willing to bet the majority of the employees are illegal like all of the other car washes in the area.

I, too, have great concerns over the Police overlooking the long lines on Route 2 from this car wash, an accident waiting to happen. I have not used this car wash because of the long lines on Route 2, suppose other businesses were to try this, the Police are setting a president in allowing this to happen. Too bad Kevin had to be seriously injured to bring this to the forefront. My prayers are with Kevin and wish him a speedy recovery.

This poor gentleman, but I'm going to have to agree with some of the individual's posting comments. This is not a time to bash individuals or the business how many times does this sort of thing happen at gas stations, the poor driving that vehicle must already feel horrible. What do long lines along route 2 have anything to do with the accident that even occurred? Was it on the highway I was under the impression the ACCIDENT happened on their property. That being said I also am family friends with the owner and his family they are good people and for people to bash them when no investigation has been done is completely far fetched . What if there was a problem with the vehicle? Whatever the case may be people using this blog to talk about money being stollen and other personal issues is horrible. I was not there for the accident; however, I am close friends with someone who was. After hearing the news of this tragedy I was appalled. After reading the comments on this posting, I am disgusted. Claims of damage to your vehicle? Rude gestures about the staff? RACIST assumptions about the legality of its employees? This is how our community comes together in times of despair? I have been going to Maritime for a while now and the staff is always EXTREMELY polite, they are very friendly and willing to help in any way possible. Not to mention the employees that work there all seem somewhat young and they all I'm sure have access to these comments. Think about how your making these kids feel when I can bet half of them are traumatized. Do any of you honestly think the people who work there are so black hearted that they do not have any sense of compassion for this man suffering? I'm ashamed to be apart of a community that is so selfish and petty when there is a man who is fighting for his life! And as many of you that are upset that this establishment re-opened, I have been there on many occassions when people have been complaining that they were closed. For the people who are genuinely concerned for this man, keep praying. However, if a member of my family was in the hospital I surely wouldnt be on a social media website posting comments. Keep fighting Kevin.

This could happen anywhere, because it happened at Maritime does not inquire that it is a bad business and certainly does not mean it was their fault. Accidents happen. Using this blog to post your personal issues and complaints with the wash is out of hand. The line out in the road- which is no longer ever there because of the remodeling- has nothing to do with a malfunction at the front of the building. Also the nationality and attitudes of the staff has absolutely nothing to do with what happened. If Maritime was such an awful place to be Kevin, and everyone else, would not have been there. This accident was very tragic and unfortunate.Kevin is in my prayers and I hope he gets well very soon.

I agree with Matthew above. Let's wait until the investigation is complete before throwing stones. Let's focus our good thoughts on Kevin's full recovery. I was there a couple of days before the accident and found the recent reconfiguration did eliminate the back-up on route 2.. I could be wrong, but perhaps those who made the route 2 backup comments haven't been there since the reconfiguration. I have always been treated with respect by every employee...especially the Latino workers Frank (commented above), most of whom, if not all, are probably legal green card holders...who, unlike the decendents of those who came over on the Mayflower, actually are willing to work. Yea h, ALL of the Hispanics that have flooded the Annapolis area since the early 2000's are legal................PLEASE!!!

They and their employers have ruined a sizable portion of our economy keeping wages and prices artificially low. The Annapolis is a great area for them as there are many lazy people who cannot mow their own grass, clean their house, paint, cook so they patronize restaurants daily. Not to mention using our roads, bridges, schools, entitlement programs etc. This costs me and I am tired of paying for it. Does anyone think of all the gang members coming here that are criminals? All of you bleeding hearts will feel differently when your child is raped by one or a loved one is killed by one driving drunk in a 1983 Datsun that is not insured or even registered. Okay…… Say Maritime Autowash did close, would that change anything. Kevin, a Maritime Autowash customer depended on this establishment to keep his car clean. Kevin, nor Maritime, I am sure, never once thought a terrible accident like this would have ever happened. I have never used the establishment, but I am a political figure who has supported this Carwash. This accident is terrible, but like most things, it was an accident. Over 85% of the population has or will be in an accident in their lifetime. Please, as you go to work in the morning, count how many accidents you make during your day. If you make one, then stop this malicious attack on Maritime Autowash. All business has insurance for this reason. Though there will probably be no conclusion to this accident, I am sure Maritime will expedite a resolution. They don't do the amount of business they do because they are bad people, but because they know what customer service and satisfaction is all about. Give Maritime the chance to resolve this accident. If i don't feel they have, which I am sure they will, then I will stop supporting them.

I have a feeling many many years ago- when establishment opened- that the owner and staff had not one idea of how popular this car wash would be, hence the remodeling that just took place??? To prevent accidents of people sitting in line on route two??? The one that happened was very unexpected and very unfortunate. How can you be so quick to assume the staff is anything but concerned and worrying for this poor man? A face that they see SO often as a customer? The majority of you are acting as if maritime is out to intentionally hurt their customers, every time I have visited the car wash I have been nothing but satisfied with the jobs they do and impressed by their customer service. Don't be so quick to disrespect and belittle this company and it's employees, this is a time where we all need to come together and pray for Kevin and hope for nothing more than a speedy, and successful recovery. First and foremost, my thoughts and prayers go out to Kevin and his family. I hope he makes a speedy recovery. As for the rest of the posts here, just about everyone of them is right in some way if you think about it. Mainly in part because they are everyone's personal opinion. For those that are saying : "why should Maritime have closed and how could people bash them", if that were one of your loved ones, you would all be singing a different tune. For those that say there could have been something mechanically wrong with the car, well that could be possible, but honestly every time I have been to places like car washes or even dealerships, the lot attendants treat the cars like they are rentals LOL. So from my past experience I would venture to say that it was the lot attendants fault more so than the car malfunctioning. I sincerely hope that Kevin recovers quickly....

Just to let you know, the car wash a waste of money and time. I go to wash haus in Edgewater, MD now because you drive your own car through. They do not drive the car. My friend had this mirror and bumper ripped off during the car wash at maritime. I have been told that he uses a guy off Industrial Rd in Annapolis for his repairs and he jacked up his car causing $5,000-$10,000 in damage. A car wash is a car wash but bad service and tearing up cars is NOT A PART OF DOING BUSINESS.

Kevin from what I know still is at shock trauma.
I think it is a completely legitimate question to wonder why the car wash wasn't closed AT ALL...at any point. Did the police investigate (like they would a traffic accident)? Did they interview the owner? Was the manager on site interviewed? Did they impound the car? I think as a community we should find out the answers to these questions and put pressure on the appropriate authorities so this horrible accident doesn't happen to someone else. We should do it for Kevin and EVERYONE involved.
I have no doubt that all the people who have posted here are well intentioned and genuinely worried about Kevin and everyone involved. People just express it in different ways. Why can’t this be a good time for all of us to come together, instead of bicker about how someone expressed themselves, and make a difference? If we all care, let’s contact authorities, press… anyone, and figure out how we can band together and prevent such a horrible thing from happening again. It is not a witch hunt. It’s just a right to investigate the circumstances and figure out a solution so this will never repeat itself.
If anyone agrees with this...let's get a discussion going.
Kevin we are all praying for you!

The carwash was closed for almost 5 hours after the incident so that all of the things listed in the above comment could be done. The police questioned witnesses and employees and did their job. It was an accident.. Sometimes bad things happen to good people. I'm sure all of the people involved feel terrible and I'm sure the owner is taking all of the necessary steps to ensure that something like that never happens again.

Hi Rebecca, thanks for the response. Witnesses here on the blog state that it wasn't closed, (not sure who has the facts correct or not) so I think we as citizens should make sure that all is being done to investigate and to prevent this from happening again. I understand somewhat your cliche and cold statement that, "sometimes bad things happen to good people". I think that’s a bit insensitive however. Why not make sure it doesn't happen again? Why not make sure that everything is being done in the investigation? If everything is being done and/or has been done as you suggest than no harm done. I certainly don’t think we should chalk this up as ‘another accident…they happen you know.’ Again, it is not a witch hunt, it is our right to know what is the outcome of the investigation and to assure that something like this will never happen again. So again, if anyone has some ideas on how to gain information regarding this, let’s get a discussion going. We’re not looking to blame anyone for this unfortunate accident…we’re only looking to make absolute sure that history won’t repeat itself and to make sure all necessary safety precautions and regulations are in place. Let’s do it for all the parties involved.

Scondarily, we live in a counrty where individual responsibility is a hallmark. Whoever is responsible for this tragic event, and asuredly someone is, needs to be held accountable. Whether it is incompetence, negligence, wanton disregard for the safety of others, mismanagement, an event of this magnitude cannot be written off to "well accidents just happen." Not only must Kevin be appropriately compensated, and the responsible person(s) penalized, but the final outcome should create a safe invironment at this business.

I am told that he is still a patient at Shock Trauma. A statement from his attorney says that he is stable and progressing after multiple surgeries.
