A photo of the men's lacrosse team saluting a bus of World War II veterans is quickly making its rounds on social media.
A photo posted to Facebook of the U.S. Naval Academy's men's lacrosse team saluting a bus of World War II veterans has gone viral.
The photo, which Navy Athletics uploaded to its Facebook page on Sunday, has garnered more than 21,000 likes and nearly 5,000 shares as of Tuesday afternoon.
All those shares and likes made the department's Facebook page the second highest fan gainer in all of sports social media on Monday, and the sixth most talked about Facebook page on Tuesday, according to Sports Fan Graph. The website tracks what is trending on social media throughout the sports world on a daily basis.
The photo was snapped as the lacrosse team returned from playing Notre Dame on Saturday by way of Baltimore Washington International Airport, according to its Facebook post. While at the airport, the team ran into 67 World War II veterans.
The team stopped to shake hands with the veterans, thank them for their service and salute as their buses passed by.
According to the post, "It put the entire trip in perspective."
When asked about why the photo went viral, Associate Athletic Director Scott Strasemeier said, "I think the photo speaks for itself."

Thank you for sharing this. I am a medical practitioner and have shown this pic to several veterans who are patients of mine. I had a retired marine with 23 years of service and 4 tours in Vietnam break down and cry when he saw it. We shared a tissue and he then he thanked me for sharing and asked me to tell my plebe daughter and the rest of the mids thank you for your service! How inspiring!
