PHOTOS: New Sculpture Goes Up at Westgate Circle

Artist Bobby Donovan said the wooden installation is meant to have a nautical reference that evokes images of the ribs of a ship or fish.

A new $10,000 sculpture erected at Westgate Circle Tuesday is comprised of five wooden arcs that its creator Bobby Donovan said he hopes inspires nautical images to those who pass by.

"It could be the ribs of a ship or the ribs of a large fish," Donovan said. "I wanted a nautical theme without being very specific."

Installation of the wooden "ribs," which are built from reclaimed oak, cedar and pine, closed the inner lane of traffic at the roundabout from about 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

A crew of volunteers helped Donovan secure the ribs to a wooden platform, which is buried beneath the earth.

The sculpture will not be finished until its steel masts are attached sometime this week. Donovan said additional road closures would not be needed in order to install the masts.

Annapolis’ Arts in Public Spaces Commission paid $10,000 to bring the sculpture to what it calls “the gateway to the city” for a two-year term.

Commission Chairman Tom Fridrich said members decided on a temporary installation because they view the circle as a "gallery space that you change out from time to time."

Fridrich also said the cost and time associated with bringing in a permanent installation was well beyond the commission's budget.

It plans to begin the search for the next sculpture soon after a formal opening reception for Donovan's work is held later this summer.

Donovan has thought of burning the piece after it completes its run at Westgate Circle, but he said he would gift it to the city if residents decided they wanted it to stay.

“If we run into something that everyone absolutely loves and doesn’t want to see moved, then we will certainly consider making it a permanent thing,” Fridrich said.

What does the new sculpture make you think of? Tell me in the comments?

No offense to Mr. Donovan's art, but this monstrosity hardly welcomes visitors! Upon approach one doesn't even know what the heck it is! Annapolis is an historic city and that's what should've been reflected by the artwork of Westgate Circle.

It's lovely how this piece echos Annapolis' historic integrity and sense of past discovery. I can't wait to see it finished.
