PHOTOS: Have You Ever Seen a Duck Like This?
Is this a common waterfowl? It's unlike any I've ever seen.
I noticed this bird from a distance the other day at Jonas Green Park. Its red head caught my eye.
I was with my boys near the shoreline and we went over to investigate. It wasn't shy and readily approached us, though admittedly it looked weird enough to kind of freak out my youngest son.
Full disclosure—it kind of freaked me out, too.
Has anyone seen this duck, or at least one like it? We weren't sure what kind of duck it is or how rare it is.
Thanks for the help.

I've seen them in Tennessee. My daughter and I always avoided them as they look so not pretty. They lived in a duck pond where we would go and feed the ducks and geese. I never could figure out what they were but they liked stale bread!

I saw (the same?) duck last week on the beach in front of the Severn Inn. Maybe it's got a new turf. I agree that it's probably a Muscovy Duck. They're more indigenous to warmer climates. Apparently DNR is introducing them into state parks, I believe.

The Annapolis duck's name is Milton (gender ambiguous). If you call out, "Milton, Milton," while throwing tuna, any fish, or protein near the pier at the Severn Inn, she/he will dart towards you! Look for her/his bear-size webbed feet prints in the sand.
