String of License Plate Thefts Hits Annapolis
Police do not yet know whether the thefts are connected.
Four license plates have been stolen from three vehicles in Annapolis since the start of the new year, according to Annapolis police.
"For whatever reason, for the past few days taking license plates seems to be popular," Sgt. Eric Crane said.
A rear tag was stolen off a vehicle in the 1700 block of Belle Drive, a trailer tag was stolen in the 700 block of Harness Creek View Road and both the front and rear tags were taken from a truck in the 90 block of Russell Street.
Crane said that people steal plates for a number of reasons. He said thieves often put them on a stolen vehicle, put them on an unregistered or uninsured vehicle, or to put them on a car to commit another crime. He also said some people steal plates because they are unable to register their own vehicle because they owe money to the MVA.
Crane did not yet know whether the thefts are related.
The stolen plate numbers are as follows: 37W012, 1AW8429 and 021165X.
