Sweet: Friday is National Donut Day

All three Annapolis Dunkin' Donuts are handing out free doughnuts Friday with purchase.

It seems like there is a special day for just about everything these days and the doughnut is no exception.

National Donut Day is Friday and in honor of their big day, doughnut shops across the nation—including some in Anne Arundel County—will be handing out free doughnuts to customers.

With many locations in the area, Dunkin' Donuts is on board with the holiday.

They say that they'll hand out one free doughnut of your choice "while supplies last." (Could Dunkin' Donuts ever really run out of doughnuts?) Find your nearest store using their restaurant locator.

In Annapolis, you can score your free doughnut at the Dunkin' Donuts on 2004 West St., the one at 1900 Fairfax Rd. or over on 2641 Riva Rd.

The holiday itself, always celebrated on the first Friday of June, was established in 1938 by the Chicago Salvation Army to honor women who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I.

The Salvation Army this year is teaming up with baking company Entenmann's to help celebrate National Donut Day; Entenmann's will donate proceeds from sales and offer customers a chance to win free doughnuts for a year, by entering a contest on its Facebook page. Entenmann's doughnuts can be found at area grocery stores.

I'm planning on grabbing myself a Boston cream. Tell me in the comments what is your favorite kind of doughnut.
