Though Hurricane Irene put a damper on the opening weekend of the Maryland Renaissance Festival in Crownsville, this past weekend went off without a hitch.

Festival-goers meandered along the wooded paths of the Renaissance-era village of Revel Grove, noshing on smoked turkey legs, macaroni and cheese, cheesecake, steak and just about every conceivable food item on a stick and enjoying all the period scenery, costumes and entertainment.

Village performers, in colorful costumes, could be found around every bend and in theater venues, performers were jousting, juggling, dancing, walking tight ropes, teaching swordsmenship and other exciting feats of Renaissance times. 

Though temperatures and humidity soared, those donning chainmail, full armor or royal regalia weren't complaining much. As for sweating, well, let's just say these costumes aren't to be taken lightly.

"It's 60 pounds—25 (pounds) for the leggings, 35 (pounds) for the top," said Silas Ben-Zoheth, of Annandale, VA.

With his mane of long hair adding to the heat, it was clear Ben-Zoheth was hot and yes, very sweaty.

As for fun to be had, it wasn't in short supply. Kids and adults seemed to be enjoying themselves on the climbing walls and giant slide, as well as throughout the festival.

"I come every year, at least like four times," said Lauren Shiflet, of Baltimore.

The Maryland Renaissance Festival, now in its 35th season, runs Sept. 10, 11, 17, 18, 24, 25 and Oct. 1, 2, 8, 9, 15, 16, 22, 23.
