Kids that compete in two or more of the triathlons receive a certificate of recognition from the state of Maryland.
The series was also created to raise awareness of melanoma, the most dangerous type of skin cancer, according to the triathlon website. Melanoma can lead to death and is one of the more common forms of cancer in adolescents and young adults.
