2 Peruvian Chicken Restaurants Coming to Annapolis

The new restaurants are located about a mile from one another.

Why did the Peruvian chicken cross the road? Apparently to come to Annapolis.

Not one, but two Peruvian chicken eateries will soon be opening within about a mile from each other. Mister Pollo is located across from Clock Tower Place on Forest Drive, next to Bruster's Ice Cream.

The other new restaurant, Pollo Ricky's, is located in the Fairfax Crossing strip center at the intersection of Forest Drive and Fairfax and Chinquapin Round roads.

Peruvian-style chicken restaurants have become very popular throughout the United States, offering affordable carry-out or eat-in rotisserie chicken. In Spanish, this style of chicken is referred to as "pollos ala brasa."

In Anne Arundel County, the Peruvian-style chicken choices were somewhat limited with Perchi's, located in Glen Burnie, being one of the few choices.

Marty Katz, the Maryland editor of Zagat Survey, thinks the Peruvian chicken restaurants might be a good fit for Annapolis.

"There is enough of a population around Annapolis—that could be a hell of a hit," he said. "That could be great."

According to Katz, the Washington, DC, area—including the Maryland and Virginia suburbs—is "ground zero" of Peruvian chicken places.

"The idea is to get a working class, cash-basis customer to get a hardy lunch for five bucks," Katz said. "A healthy, non-fried, balanced lunch for five bucks."

In recent months, Annapolis has seen the closure of a few restaurants—including Annapolis Grille, Hell Point, Austin Grill and McCormick and Schmick's

For those who like a dash of logic with their Peruvian chicken, could there be a reason why some restaurants fail while others are opening?

Of course, there's food quality and pricing, as well as quality of service, but there is something more—taste sensation.

According to the National Restaurant Association's top ten restaurant facts of 2012, "66% of adults say their favorite restaurant foods provide flavor and taste sensations which cannot easily be duplicated in their home kitchen."
