Whiz Kid of the Week: Nicolette Hood

Hillsmere Elementary second grader takes her interest in reading to the top of the school's Chessie Reading Program.

 

Whiz Kid: Nicolette Hood

Grade: Second

School: Hillsmere Elementary

Accomplishment: Nicolette is the top reader for Hillsmere Elementary School's Chessie Reading Program. She read 141 books this year, far beyond any previous total. Chessie is a reading program for first through third graders. Students read throughout the year and move up the ranks of the specialized reading program.

Those who read 25 books earn a gold medal.

“Nicky went above and beyond what was required of her,” Denise Augustine, the school’s librarian, said in an email. “She is not only an avid reader, she is a joy to have in class. She is a hard worker and has a positive attitude.”

She received top honors at an awards celebration last week. In addition to her gold medal, Nicolette also received a gift certificate to a local bookstore.

Other Interests: Nicolette also plays soccer, lacrosse and is a swimmer.

“She is a well rounded girl,” Augustine said.
