Mortimer Brewster (Sammy Stagg ’13) is a newspaperman and author known for his diatribes against marriage. We meet him as he prepares to propose to the love of his life, Elaine Harper (Lilly Sevin ’15). Now all that is required is a quick trip home to tell Mortimer's two maiden aunts (Abby Hawver ’13 and Summer Bedard ‘13 ). Mortimer’s excitement at his pending nuptials to Elaine is thrown into disarray after discovering that his two spinster aunts have taken to murdering lonely old men by poisoning them with a glass of homemade elderberry wine laced with arsenic, strychnine, and “just a pinch” of cyanide.
Mortimer’s problems are compounded upon learning that one brother Teddy (Seth Coveyou ’13) believes himself to be Teddy Roosevelt and his second brother, Jonathon, (Patrick Cochran ’13) has arrived looking for a place to hide and bringing the police along with him. Mortimer must figure out how to protect his aunts and brother Teddy while frantic he will fall victim to the insanity that “practically gallops” in his family. An engaging story is coupled with a humorous and talented cast to deliver up a dark yet farcical comedy. Witty and hilarious, this play is sure to entertain.
