Colorful steel sculptures by David Hayes, once a student of renowned sculptor David Smith, will be featured in the “David Hayes: A Sculptor of Space and Nature” exhibition at the Mitchell Gallery and on the grounds of St. John’s College from January 11 through February 17. As part of the opening reception, Mitchell Gallery Art Educator Lucinda Edinberg will lead a tour of the “David Hayes” exhibition followed by a hands-on workshop. Families are welcome to the opening reception, which is free and open to the public, and will be held on January 20 from 3:30 to 5 p.m.
American artist David Hayes is known for his sculptures that reflect forms in nature and the human figure. His work is further inspired by Alexander Calder through their friendship developed while he was in France as a recipient of a Fulbright award and a Guggenheim Fellowship. Hayes’s sculptures as well as his works in ceramics, stained glass, and paintings are included in many major collections such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, and the Guggenheim Museum in New York. The approximately 40 artworks in this exhibition, selected from work from the past 60 years, reflect Hayes’s creative process from conception to production. “David Hayes: A Sculptor of Space and Nature” is organized by David Hayes in conjunction with the Mitchell Gallery at St. John’s College.

January 20 Opening Reception & Family Program. Art Educator Lucinda Edinberg will lead a tour of the “David Hayes” exhibition, followed by a hands-on workshop from 3:30 to 5 p.m.
January 29 Lecture. Artist David Hayes will lecture on his work in the “David Hayes” exhibition at 5:30 p.m.
January 30 Art Express. Art Educator Lucinda Edinberg will give a lunchtime gallery talk on the “David Hayes” exhibition from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m.
February 5 Seminar. St. John’s tutor David Townsend and artist Ebby Malmgren will lead a seminar related to the exhibition at 7 p.m. Space is limited. To register, call 410-626-2556.
February 7 Book Club. Join members of the Mitchell Gallery Book Club for a docent tour of the “David Hayes” exhibition followed by a discussion of the nonfiction book “The Architecture of Happiness,” an exploration of the emotional affects of our built environment by Alain de Botton, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. The discussion will be led by sculptor Burton Blistein. February 10 Sunday Afternoon Tour. Art Educator Lucinda Edinberg will lead a tour of the “David Hayes” exhibition at 3 p.m.

More About St John's College
A National Historic Landmark, St. John's College is located just steps away from the Maryland State House and the Governor's Residence. Originally founded in 1696 as King Williams School, it was chartered as a college by the state of Maryland in 1784 and named St. John's, which it is still known as today. Undergraduates work towards a liberal arts major which includes a curriculum of Ancient Greek, French, Math, Lab Science and Music, among other things. The school's other campus, located in Santa Fe, New Mexico, has the same curriculum.
The school's proximity to the U.S. Naval Academy makes for a friendly rivalry. As part of a tradition that started in the 1980's, the two schools compete against each other in an annual croquet match that's open to the public every spring.
