Great Outdoors Month is next June.
State officials announced this week plans for Great Outdoors Month in June, inviting Maryland residents to mark Celebrate Maryland Outdoors Days from June 8 to 22. The second annual outdoors days aims to get families outside. State officials also invite organiztions to share outdoor events on their website. The outdoors days start with National Get Outdoors Day on June 8 and ends with the Great American Backyard Campout on June 22, according to a Department of Natural Resources release. The Military Bowl is moving to military property. According to a report in The Capital Gazette, an agreement will be announced Monday to move the college football game from to the U.S Naval Academy's Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, starting with this year's game on Dec. 27. Sponsor Northrop Grumman historically gives 5,000 tickets to each Military Bowl to military personnel, according to the report, which also states a "military village" will be set up in the stadium parking lot to promote American armed forces. The game was previously played at RFK Stadium in Washington, DC. Navy played the inaugural game—then called the EagleBank Bowl—in 2008, losing to Wake Forest by a score of 29-19. Primary election day is Tuesday, Sept. 17, and the general election is Tuesday, Nov. 5. A web-based boat management service says Ego Alley is the best place for its business.
A company that’s bringing the business of boat management into the smartphone age has its sights set on opening downtown along Ego Alley. VesselVanguard, a company that’s had a foot in Annapolis for years, plans to locate its headquarters in Annapolis at a property that could soon become the hottest new retail real estate in downtown—the former Fawcett’s boating supply store. City officials are currently in the process of easing the sale of the property to several investors, who plan to tear down the old building and construct a new one in its place—one conducive to multiple tenants. Anne Arundel County's health officials warned swimmers to stay out of Weems Creek due to the spillage of 120,000 gallons of wastewater on Wednesday. A force main break at Jennifer Road created a contaminated area of sewage from the creek's headwaters to Rowe Boulevard, according to a release from the Anne Arundel County Department of Health. The affected area was cleaned but the waterway remains closed until further notice. "People coming in contact with the affected water are advised to wash well with soap and warm water immediately. Clothing should also be washed," according to the release. Plans call for the post office to be expanded by 15,000 square feet to use as a government office.
The Annapolis Post Office on Church Circle was recently purchased for $3.2 million by the Maryland Board of Public Works, which has plans to more than double its size and convert the building for use as a state government office. The plan to purchase the building was announced in March in a capital budget report from the board, which estimates the total price of the project—including purchase and expansion—at $12.8 million. The sale was subject to the board leasing back a third of the building’s 13,000 square feet to the Post Office for up to 20 months after the sale. Ultimately the board plans to spend $8.1 million on a 15,000-square-foot expansion to the building, bringing its total size to 28,000 square feet, according to the report. “…

The cutoff for registration in the Annapolis parade is May 20, a week before Memorial Day on May 27.
Dozens will line the streets of Annapolis for the annual Memorial Day Parade, and the registration period for parade participants ends soon. City officials are urging participants to register online (click here) before the May 20 deadline. Walk-up units will not be approved, according to a press release from the city. The parade will kick off at 10 a.m. on May 27 at Amos Garrett Boulevard, and continue around Church Circle before moving down Main Street. Following the parade, there will be a memorial ceremony at Susan Campbell Park, co-hosted by the city of Annapolis and Fleet Reserve Branch 24. Fitch is the third financial ratings agency to issue a determination on the city's bonding ability.
In the third financial agency rating this month, the city of Annapolis received a “negative” outlook from Fitch, a global ratings agency. Fitch downgraded the city from stable to negative, citing a low Annual Required Contribution (ARC) to the city’s police and fire pension, according to a press release from the city. Annapolis Mayor Josh Cohen said Fitch’s determination is a result of the agency not agreeing with the city’s style of accounting. “During the first two years of critical cost savings, we chose to funnel money into our reserves rather than into the ARC, only putting aside $200,000 a year for the Contribution. The New England College poll previewing the 2016 Presidential primary shows Hillary Clinton with a commanding lead.
Gov. Martin O'Malley finished last among a field of 2016 Democratic Presidential hopefuls, according to a poll released by New England College. The poll released Tuesday by the New Hampshire-based college found that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton led the field with 65 percent of those surveyed saying they would vote for her in 2016. O'Malley finished last among the field of six with zero percent saying they would vote for the two-term Democratic Maryland governor. Rounding out the field is Vice President Joseph Biden with 10 percent, Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren with 5 percent, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo with 4 percent and Massachusetts Gov. Many times when visiting football teams fans come to a Navy game, they fall in love with the city and want to visit more often or even move here.
