Cat Rescue in Gingerville Woods - a Happy Tale

Possible first for fire department on Sunday morning rescue.

At around 10 a.m. on Sunday morning, a Gingerville Woods homeowner went outside and heard the screams of a cat.

The reason?  Her cat somehow got outside and stuck up a tree - about 30-feet up, screaming out one loud and frightened meow after another.

Within minutes, the Anne Arundel County Fire Department (AAFD) came to the rescue, with a ladder truck.

In what could be a first for the AAFD, as soon as the ladder was put in place, the cat (Hei Mao) jumped on the ladder, walked down to the top of the truck and leapt to the ground.

There was no need for the AAFD personnel to climb the ladder or to coax Hei Mao down from her perch.

"That's a first," said one first responder.

"Never seen that before - that's a smart cat," said another.

Hei Mao immediately went to her food and water bowls to satisfy her large hunger and thirst.

How long the cat had been up the tree is unknown, but there is plenty of wildlife in Gingerville Woods, including foxes and raccoons, which could have forced Hei Mao to climb a tree for safety.

What does Hei Mao mean?  Check out the photos for the answer.

How was Patch on the scene to cover this story?

The writer is the cat's very grateful owner.

AAFD is absolutely THE Best!!! Glad Hei Mao is such a smart cat and glad she is back in her house, safe and snug!

Thanks Becky - I'm very glad as well. And yes, AAFD is the best.
