Edgewater Man Wins $1M Lottery Prize

The winning ticket was sold at a High's store in Annapolis.

A lucky Edgewater lottery player walked away with the $1 million second-tier Mega Million prize.

The Mega Millions jackpot reached $550 million before the Dec. 17 drawing, which is why an Edgewater man told lottery officials he bought several tickets.

But it was a full two days after the drawing that he bothered to check his tickets, and found that he had just won a life-changing amount of money. In fact, he was just one number shy of the jackpot.

“I looked up the numbers at home and sure enough on the third line, I had all the numbers except for the Mega Ball,” he said.

Out of 363,610 winners in Maryland, the Edgewater resident was the only one in the state to take the second-tier $1 million prize, lottery officials said in a press release. He has kept his identify a secret since winning.

The man, a federal government employee, immediately told his family, and sent his mother a picture of the winning ticket. As a precaution before redeeming it in Baltimore, the man placed the ticket in a safe, and even brought the safe for the trip north.

The family plans to invest the money for their family's future, but said they might splurge on a few date nights in the near future.

The winning ticket was purchased at the High's located at 158 Old Mill Bottom Road in Annapolis.
