As owner of , Jared Littmann is constantly grappling with the growing cost of business.
And he’s always on the lookout for ways to cut those costs. He called upon his background in environmental engineering and environmental law for his latest effort.
Littmann recently had 72 solar panels installed on the roof of the popular Annapolis business on Forest Drive.
“I am an environmental engineer by training,” he said. “And I still have an environmental interest.”
He said he worked with Solar Energy Services Inc. of Millersville for the solar set-up in an effort to lower his utility costs.
The result is a 13- to 14-percent drop in the business’ electricity usage.
The system on the roof is wired directly into the building’s electrical system and its meter, Littmann said. The panels cover about a third of the roof, he said.
“The roof being flat was very helpful,” he said. “And we’re on a relatively high spot.”
Littmann said he also thought about installing a similar system at his home, but said the costs are still prohibitive.
The business was eligible for a grant program, as well as federal, state and city tax credits, he said. But the city does not have such programs for residential systems, he said.
