No. 1—Appeals Board Axes Quiet Waters Development
In a surprising 3-1 vote the Annapolis Board of Appeals struck down the construction of approximately 160 homes on a lot adjacent to Quiet Waters Park. The board members cited concerns offer traffic and whether the number of homes would go against preserving the natural characteristics of the development. Jerome Feldman, an attorney representing on of the developers, declined to comment on the board's decision, but Assistant City Attorney Gary Elson thinks the case is headed to Circuit Court.
Annapolis police raided a home blocks from Georgetown East Elementary on Monday evening and found 432 Ecstasy pills and Diazepam—a prescription medication for anxiety. Johnelle Downs, 22, was arrested inside the home and is charged with drug possession, drug possession with intent to distribute, possession of drug paraphernalia and drug possession with intent to distribute in a school zone.
No. 3—Police Chief Says Eastport Shootings Weren't Random
An investigation into the shooting of two men in Eastport on Sept. 9 has lead Annapolis police officers to believe that it was not a random attack. Chief Michael Pristoop said that he doesn't think the gunman or gunmen will attack the neighborhood again, and he is hopeful that officers will soon be able to make an arrest.
No. 4—Naval Academy Goes Gangnam Style
Midshipmen from the Naval Academy's 22nd Company created their own remake of the popular South Korean Pop song "Gangnam Style" by Psy. The original “Gangnam Style” has nearly 200 million views on YouTube, and it has sparked a number of American spoofs. The midshipmen's spirit video has also gone viral, and as of Friday afternoon it had more than 2.1 million views—more than 10 times the amount of any other academy spirit video on YouTube.
No. 5—Masked Man Robs BankAnnapolis
A masked man robbed the BankAnnapolis at 1000 Bestgate Rd. shortly before 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, according to Anne Arundel County police. Police reported that a man entered the bank, implied he had a weapon and demanded money from the bank tellers. The tellers complied, and the man fled with an undisclosed amount of money.
