In 1967, Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. gave a speech titled “Where Do We Go from Here?” St. John’s College invites citizens and community leaders to gather together and explore this question to honor Dr. King’s life and as a continuation of his work. The program opens with a keynote address by former Deputy Attorney General for Maryland and current member of the Maryland State Board of Education, Donna Hill Staton, on Saturday, January 12 at 9:30 a.m. A panel discussion featuring Martha Gardner, Anne Arundel County 2012 Teacher of the Year, and K-12 students and educators from area schools follows at 10 a.m. Seminars, co-led by faculty members from St. John’s and Sojourner-Douglass College, will be from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Staton’s keynote address and the panel discussion will be held in the Francis Scott Key Auditorium. Participants should arrive at 9 a.m. for registration and a continental breakfast. All events are free; the seminars, however, require advance registration. To register: www.stjohnscollege.edu/events
Staton’s keynote address and the panel discussion explore “Protecting Our Children, Protecting Our Future.” Staton’s long history of involvement with youth development initiatives includes coordinating attorney-mentoring programs with Baltimore City schools, the High School Mock Trial Program and pro bono legal representation of children in need of assistance. In 2000, Staton, a former Howard County judge, was named one of Maryland's Top 100 Women by the Daily Record and has been recognized as a Woman of Achievement in Maryland History. She received her JD from The George Washington University.
