City of Annapolis police arrested a man for stealing a car while they tried to arrest its owner.
According to a press release, police officers observed Howard Durley, 29, of Annapolis assaulting a woman outside of his Chevrolet Tahoe Monday evening at Juliana Circle at Newtowne Drive, and they moved in to make an arrest.
Durley reportedly fled the scene when the officers approached.
While Durley was being arrested, Barry Butler, 31, got inside the vehicle—which was still running—and drove off, according to police.
Officers attempted to stop Butler and he fled to the 1400 block of Tyler Avenue, where he was arrested.
Butler is charged with numerous traffic offenses, first- and second-degree assault, motor vehicle theft and theft between $10,000 and $100,000.
According to the release, officers also arrested Durley and charged him with possession of a controlled and dangerous substance (CDS), possession of CDS paraphernalia and disorderly conduct.
Both men are being held at the the Jennifer Road Detention Center. Butler is being held on a $75,000 bond and Durley on a $25,000 bond.
