UPDATE: Fire Officials Charge Teen with Arson

A 17-year-old Annapolis boy was arrested in connection with an elevator fire at Anne Arundel Medical Center.

UPDATE (1 p.m.)—Anne Arundel County Fire Investigators arrested a 17-year-old Annapolis boy for arson Tuesday evening on charges related to an elevator fire at the Health Sciences Building of  (AAMC).
He was issued a juvenile citation that charged him with first-degree arson, second-degree malicious burning, malicious destruction of property less than $500 and reckless endangerment.

County firefighters responded to a reported fire alarm sounding at AAMC, which is located at 2000 Medical Parkway, around 4:45 p.m. Saturday.

According to the Anne Arundel County Fire Department, during their initial assessment, crews found a heavy odor of smoke in the area of the elevators. Further investigation revealed a small fire in an elevator. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire.

Investigators determined the fire to be incendiary or intentionally set.

Surveillance photos showed a person of interest exiting the elevators. Investigators distributed the images, and the individual was positively identified and questioned.

An arrest was made after the interview, according to a press release.

The boy was reportedly released into the custody of his parents and a hearing has been scheduled for July.
