Anne Arundel County police Saturday arrested and charged a man they said is responsible for a series of thefts from 24 Hour Fitness in Parole.
Police allege that the man had earlier broken into lockers at the gym and stole wallets from them. He would then use the stolen credit cards at area businesses, according to a police press release.
Police charged Roger Stephen Marcus, 43, of the unit block of Hudson Street in Annapolis, with multiple counts of theft and other related charges.
Police said gym employees noticed a man walking around inside the gym Saturday afternoon and thought they recognized him from surveillance photos that police had released earlier.
Employees called police while the man was still in the gym in the Annapolis Towne Centre at Parole.
The man is not a member of the gym, employees said, according to a release.
During their investigation, detectives obtained a search warrant for Marcus' belongings and said they found evidence that matched the surveillance footage, some from the Target store just across the street in the town center.
Police said they also found items they believed to have been purchased with the stole credit cards.
They said they have linked Marcus to at least five thefts from the 24-hour gym and continue to investigate similar incidents with other local jurisdictions.
