UPDATE: Annapolis Man Dies in Route 50 Car Fire

A car caught on fire the intersection of Route 50 and Route 450 early Monday morning killing one person and leaving another person critically injured.

UPDATE (5:20 p.m.)—One man is dead and a woman is critically injured after the truck they were in struck a guardrail, overturned and caught on fire at the intersection of Route 50 and Route 450 in Annapolis early Monday morning, according to Anne Arundel County fire officials.

Firefighters arrived on scene early Monday morning to discover a 2006 GMC pickup "fully engulfed with fire" around 12:48 a.m., said fire department spokesman Keith Hamilton.

The car was traveling eastbound on Route 50 when the driver took the exit for Route 450, but the truck crashed through the guardrail and then caught on fire.

Maryland State Police identified the man as Brian Jonelis, 33, of Annapolis, but the woman's name has not yet been released. The impact threw both Jonelis and a 24-year-old woman from the truck, but Jonelis ended up pinned underneath. Police said passersby made attempts to free Jonelis, but they were unsuccessful. Emergency personnel reportedly found the woman in the median.

Jonelis was pronounced dead at the scene, and the woman was flown via helicopter to Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore with serious, life-threatening injuries.
