Trader Joe's Evacuated, Reopened After Odor Reported

Reports say people were sickened by what was believed to be an odor caused by a Freon leak.

As shoppers headed to stores for groceries in preparation for the pending snow in Annapolis, the Trader Joe's was evacuated Tuesday morning.

Division Chief Keith Swindle, a spokesman for the Anne Arundel County Fire Department, said an odor was reported at about 10:45 a.m. at the store located at 160 Jennifer Road.

Swindle said crews found three people suffering from symptoms of throat irritation and respiratory distress: Two people were taken to nearby Anne Arundel Medical Center with minor injuries and a third person refused medical treatment.

The store was evacuated and a hazardous materials crew was requested. Swindle said the cause of the leak was Freon from a refrigerator line, which was fixed, and the store was ventilated and reopened at 12:40 p.m.
