Witness Thwarts Purse Snatcher

Annapolis police said a man dropped a stolen purse after a witness spotted him rummaging through its contents.

A man who shoved a woman to the ground and stole her purse was followed by a motorist as he fled scene, and dropped the purse when he realized he had been spotted.

The purse snatching happened in the unit block of Conduit Street on Saturday afternoon, according to Annapolis police.

The victim told officers that she parked her car on Cathedral Street around 5 p.m. She was walking toward her boyfriend's home on Conduit Street when a man ran up behind her. He reportedly grabbed her purse with one hand and pushed her to the ground with the other.

Another woman, who was driving along Conduit Street, noticed the man running with the purse and told police she thought it was suspicious.

She followed him in her vehicle to the end of Revel Street by the water. She told police the man started rummaging through the purse and throwing items on the ground.

When he saw the witness, the man dropped the purse and fled through the parking lot at St. Mary's High School, according to a police report.

Officers recovered the purse, which had its handles broken but wasn't missing any items.

This is the third purse snatching in Annapolis this month. On Dec. 11 a woman had her purse torn off her arm while walking home on Clay Street. And on Dec. 8, a man threatened to rape a woman if she didn't hand over her handbag while walking in Eastport.

Thanks to the good Samaritan who followed the thief! Nice news to hear, for a change...
