A special meeting is scheduled for Monday night at the Anne Arundel County Council's chambers for the official swearing in of new District 1 Councilman Peter Smith, and an interview with county police chief James Teare Sr.
Smith was selected after the council voted more than 100 times to determine who should fill the vacancy in District 1 left by former councilman Daryl Jones in January. Smith told Patch that he was surprised but excited now that the council can finally move forward with other business.
Some of the council's other business includes an interview with Teare after they issued a subpoena for him to appear before them for questioning. Teare’s attorney Gerald P. Martin to the Monday meeting.
Martin said in the letter to the council that Teare's testimony could interfere with . Martin also said the council had voted on the subpoena behind closed doors, in violation of public meeting requirements.
Council Chairman Derek Fink (R-3rd District) said the subpoena was issued properly and called a meeting of the council on Thursday to issue a formal resolution for the subpoena. However, at the last minute, , which was assembled within a few hours.
Fink said that didn't change things, and the subpoena was still valid.
“[Teare] has been subpoenaed. We believe he should show up on Monday,” Fink said. “If he chooses to not to show up, then we’ll see.”
