Mayor Opens Garages, Shelters Ahead of Hurricane Sandy

Annapolis is encouraging residents to protect their cars and clear roadways by parking for free at its four garages.

Annapolis will open its four city garages for free parking at 3 p.m. on Sunday ahead of Hurricane Sandy, according to a press release.

Vehicles can remain inside the garage free of charge throughout the storm, which is expected to strike the Chesapeake Bay region sometime between Sunday night and Monday.

Mayor Josh Cohen said in the release that residents who live along narrow streets should move their vehicles into the garages or into other sheltered areas to help keep the streets clear for emergency vehicles and utility crews.

Cohen is also asking residents in low-lying areas or along the coastline to have an evacuation plan.

Residents who are unable to stay with family, friends or in a hotel can go to Annapolis High School at 2700 Riva Rd.—which is the city's storm shelter. It will also open at 3 p.m. on Sunday. The shelter is pet friendly but only permits dogs and cats.

Annapolis employees will provide transportation to the shelter for any resident at no cost. Call 410-260-2211 to schedule transportation starting at noon on Sunday.

City officials remind residents to bring the following items with you to the shelter:

  • Medications
  • Baby food and diapers
  • Cards, books and games
  • Toiletries
  • Charged cell phone
  • Identification
  • Valuable papers
  • Cash

Annapolis' non-emergency call center will activate at noon on Sunday. The center will be open 24 hours a day for the duration of, and recovery from, Hurricane Sandy. The number is 410-260-2211.  Persons with emergency requests should call 911.
