Top 5 Stories: Midshipman Dies and Chipotle Eyes Downtown

Here's a quick look back at the biggest headlines of the week in Annapolis.

No. 1—

A second midshipman on summer leave from the Naval Academy died early Thursday after his car crashed into a tree near Fort Cooper State Park in Florida. The force of the crash ejected Nicholas Tarr, 21, from his Lincoln sedan, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Austin Zalik, also 21, died Aug. 3 when his pickup truck rolled down an embankment and collided with a tractor-trailer on Interstate 78 in Pennsylvania.

No. 2—

Chipotle is looking into renting a downtown Annapolis location again. The restaurant chain applied for building permits at the address of . And Chipotle representatives met with Mayor Josh Cohen and other  Thursday morning to discuss the proposal. Chipotle tried to rent another location dowtown in 2006.

No. 3—

The man accused of terrifying moviegoers at the  at the  on Aug. 2 has been ordered to undergo a complete psychiatric evaluation by a district court judge. Kyle Nolan Tanner, 25, of no known address, appeared in court Tuesday on a mental health docket, where judge ordered the evaluation before she would decide on whether Tanner is too much of a safety risk to be released on bail.

No. 4—

An Annapolis man was arrested for allegedly seeking to hire a contract killer in Virginia to murder his wife, Leesburg Police officials said. Leesburg police said a man told officers earlier this year that Mansel approached him asking for his help in finding and hiring a contract killer. Wendell Brian Mansel was charged with attempted capital murder/murder for hire and soliciting murder for hire.

No. 5—Police Arrest Suspect in Triple Stabbing

A man accused of stabbing three people Friday inside a Woodside Gardens apartment in the 700 block of Newtowne Drive has been arrested by Annapolis Police. Marcus Levon Freeman, 25, of Annapolis, was charged with multiple crimes, including one count of attempted second-degree murder and three counts of first-degree assault. All three victims sustained non-life threatening injuries.
