Field Hockey Teams Play for the Cure

Severna Park dominated the Monday night game against Annapolis, winning 4-2, while both teams raised money for Susan G. Komen for the Cure to recognize breast cancer awareness month.

For the past three years, the Severna Park and Annapolis field hockey teams have come together in October to raise money for Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The field on Monday night at Annapolis High was dominated by pink accessories—and by the Falcons, who easily handled Annapolis with a 4-2 win.

Players for both teams wore pink hair bows and shin guard covers with pink ribbons on them. This year's fundraiser included a silent auction of items valued more than $100, pink breast cancer awareness bracelets and more.

The game itself was virtually one-sided in favor of Severna Park, who, with the win, improved to 10-2 on the season.

Severna Park, Broadneck and South River have dominated field hockey throughout the county in past years. The Falcons only two losses on the season came against the Bruins on Sept. 4 and the Seahawks on Oct. 2. However, the balance is beginning to shift.

Annapolis coach Angela Carpita told The Baltimore Sun she has noticed that the gap between teams is shrinking. The Panthers are 7-3 on the season.

"I think our girls have proven this year, in a tough loss to South River, against Broadneck and in this game tonight, that we're 180 degrees from where we were in years past," Carpita told The Sun. "Our expectations are that we can see there is a light and we can touch it."

Severna Park's final game of the season will come on Wednesday when it takes on South River and looks to avoid being swept by the Seahawks this season.
