Academy Loses Another Midshipman to Car Crash

Nicholas Tarr was killed on impact when his car crashed into a tree near a state park in Florida.

(Update: Aug. 10, 10:45 a.m.)— A midshipman at the Naval Academy died early Thursday after his car crashed into a tree near Fort Cooper State Park in Florida, according to WSTP News.

"The Naval Academy family is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Midshipman Nicholas Tarr,” Naval Academy Superintendent Vice Adm. Michael Miller said. “His family and friends are in our thoughts at this very difficult time and we will take great care to remember, celebrate and honor his life when the brigade returns for the fall semester."

Florida Highway Patrol told WSTP that Nicholas Tarr, 21, failed to negotiate a curve in his Lincoln sedan at about 2:20 a.m. Thursday.

When Tarr, a Florida resident, tried to get back onto the road, he overcorrected his car and hit a fence and then a tree. The Florida police told WSTP that Tarr's car split in two around the tree and he was ejected from the vehicle. Tarr died at the scene.

"Words seem so inadequate to describe the sense of loss we feel in losing another member of our Naval Academy family so suddenly,” said Miller. “We at Annapolis are brothers and sisters spanning generations of tradition, camaraderie and sacrifice for more than 160 years.”

Tarr is the second midshipman to die in a car crash in less than a week.

Austin Zalik, also 21, died Aug. 3 when his pickup truck rolled down an embankment and collided with a tractor-trailer on Interstate 78 in Pennsylvania.

Tarr was a member of the 26th Company and a general science major at the academy. He was a member of the Semper Fi (Marine Corps) Society and the oceanography, mountaineering and math clubs, according to the Naval Academy.

Both Tarr and Zalik were on summer leave at the time of the accidents, and both crashes are still under investigation.
