PHOTOS: Naval Academy Cuts Birthday Cake

The U.S. Naval Academy passed out cake to its midshipmen to mark the Navy's 237th birthday.

Midshipmen at the U.S. Naval Academy were treated to cake during lunch on Friday in honor of the U.S. Navy's 237th birthday.

The youngest and oldest midshipmen cut the cake using a sword, which is a Navy tradition that is intended to give respect to the oldest while honoring its commitment to train the next generation. Annapolis Mayor Josh Cohen received the honorary first piece.

In addition to cake, all 4,400 midshipmen received a present from the City of Annapolis and Mainstreets Annapolis Partnership—a business card that's called "Plates and Perks." It entitles them to discounts at restaurants and retail shops around Annapolis for an entire year.

Looking forward to next year's celebration too, when my grand-daughter will be a Midshipman 4th Class! Appointment is 2 weeks old, her enthusiasm is 5 years in its determination! Go Navy!
