Anne Arundel County Schools Trying Heterogeneous Grouping

School system offers more students access to rigorous coursework at all county elementary schools with Advanced Learner Programs, and at Annapolis High and Central Middle.

Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) hopes that offering greater access to rigorous coursework will increase achievement for all students. New Advanced Learner Programs at all county elementary schools was one step taken in this new direction. Heterogeneous grouping became a hot topic after the principal at Annapolis High announced last spring his intention to utilize it at the school. While that possibility is still being investigated, Central Middle in Edgewater grouped sixth-grade students together in the same math level (Algebraic Readiness) starting with this school year. Good testimony from parents to Board of Ed. tonight... now up to 400 parents signing petition opposed to heterogenous grouping of students. Board seemed unresponsive, until Central Middle School parents notified them they're organizing an opt-out of the MSA test, not having their advanced students take the MSA, and see how the Board likes those ratings and repercussions.....   more ›

AACPS Gifted and Talented Programs Restructured

At one of four informational sessions held around the county, officials from the Advanced Studies and Programs offices presented overviews of the gifted and talented programs for county elementary school students.

Parents learned about the new structure of Anne Arundel County Public School (AACPS) programs targeting their gifted and talented children at informational sessions last week. A meeting Thursday at Lindale Middle School was one of four presentations given throughout the county and focused specifically on Primary Talent Development (PTD) and Advanced Learner Programs (ALP) in county elementary schools. Carol Ann McCurdy, senior manager of Advanced Studies and Programs for the school system, said the informational sessions were designed to share details with parents about changes to both programs. “We want parents to have an understanding that every school is an ALP school to some degree,” McCurdy said. “The goal is to provide parents with …

AACPS is pulling a smoke and mirrors trick w/ elementary learning....botched implementation, much less resources than last year, the "fully implemented" schools like Jones Elem had 3 of 15 teachers trained w/ 2 days of training...
