Women's Elite Cycling Team

The Women's Elite Team, part of the Annapolis Bicycle Racing Team, is a stealth group of women ready to take it to the next level.

Sara Claffery is like a kid on Christmas morning, bursting with enthusiasm. Listening to her over the phone I pictured her bouncing in place as she spoke to me about her elite cycling team and their success this season. The Annapolis Bicycle Racing Team has been around long enough that most local residents have come across a member at one point or another. But even among the most avid cyclists in the area, the fact that there are women on the team and not just tagging along or bringing up the rear in a pace line, seems to be a well kept secret. Though many female members of the ABRT are still working their way up in the ranks by competing in Cat 4 races, there are a handful of women in the Cat 2 and even one in the Cat 1 division. These …

Bay Country Century

Local charity ride gives local cyclists an opportunity to enjoy scenic views close to home.

This past Saturday morning, cyclists from all over Maryland gathered to complete the Bay Country Century Ride. Though much of the proceeds from the ride go to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, officially categorizing this as a charity ride, it is different from other charity rides in that it is organized by cyclists for cyclists. The Bay Country Century is organized by the Annapolis Bicycle Racing Team and sponsored by Bike Doctor of Annapolis. Because the organizers have ridden their fair share of centuries over the years they know what is important to other riders. They understand the importance of a well marked course and well stocked food and water stops. They also understand how much beautiful scenery can add to the experience. The …
