Annapolis City Council Alderman Ross Arnett has announced his intent to run for re-election for his Ward 8 seat. Arnett made the announcement this week at Boatyard Bar and Grill to retain his seat, which represents the Eastport area of Annapolis. Arnett, a Democrat, has represented Ward 8 since 2007. Before entering public office, he was an economist with 32 years of service with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, according to the city of Annapolis website. Joe Budge replaces Dick Israel as the alderman for Ward 1 in the city of Annapolis.
A longtime advocate for downtown Annapolis issues, Joe Budge was recently selected as the new city councilman for Ward 1. Budge was chosen by the Annapolis Democratic Central Committee on April 30 as the successor to former Alderman Dick Israel, who stepped down from the Ward 1 seat in April because he was relocating to outside the city. Ward 5 Alderman Jared Littmann has announced his intent to campaign as an incumbent for his seat in the 2013 Annapolis city election. Littmann, who owns the K&B True Value hardware store on Forest Drive, took over the Ward 5 seat in January for former Alderman Mathew Silverman, who resigned on Nov. 30. The city's downtown alderman resigned Monday due to continuing health concerns.
Following the resignation of Annapolis Alderman Richard E. Israel this week, city officials are beginning the search for his replacement. Israel, 70, a Ward 1 Alderman with the City Council, chose to step down from his public seat eight months before his second term was up, due to health concerns. Israel is diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. He plans to move to a senior community in Edgewater, according to The Capital. Now, the Annapolis Democratic Central Committee must select candidates for Israel's successor, and they have a small window of opportunity to do so before the city's 2013-14 budget is due for a vote in May. The debate over whether to fire Angela Wakhweya, Anne Arundel County's health officer, has spilled over to the Annapolis City Council. At its Monday night meeting, the Council spent nearly 30 minutes discussing whether it would vote on a resolution supporting Wakhweya's continued service at the agency. "I just simply have not heard any negatives associated with Dr. Wakhweya," said Alderman Ken Kirby (D-6th Ward), who drafted the bill. Jared Littmann, the owner of K&B True Value hardware store, is the next alderman for Ward 5 thanks to a 5-2 vote by the Annapolis Democratic Central Committee on Monday night. "I'm truly flattered," Littmann said. "Coming in here and listening to what each of the other three candidates had to say, I was very impressed." A short-term fix for Annapolis' affordable housing program has been tabled by City Council in favor of overhauling the entire law. "I think that we really do need to go back to the drawing board, and I’m not sure that this fix is coming close to doing that," Alderman Ross Arnett (D-8th Ward) said. "Every time we look at it more questions come up. I would argue at a minimum that we postpone and send this back to committee to really explore this program." The program is the Moderately Priced Dwelling Unit (MPDU) Law, which passed in 2004. It requires new developments with more than 10 units to provide 12 percent of its homes and 6 percent of its rentals for less than market value.
