Heart Health Foundation Paints the Town Red

The foundation sponsors free screenings and a special event on Valentine's Day at Rams Head on Stage in Annapolis.

A local organization has painted the town red. Not literally, but Annapolis-based Heart Health Foundation is making its message loud and clear. That message—awareness of heart and vascular disease—can't be missed, whether it's the banners in downtown Annapolis, at Annapolis Towne Centre or events at area schools and businesses. Like other months that are designated to bring awareness of particular diseases, February has become synonymous with heart disease. Cathy Samaras, a spokesperson for the Heart Health Foundation, explained how and why she got involved with the organization. Her husband, George Samaras, is the chief of the Department of Medicine at Anne Arundel Medical Center (AAMC). "Four years ago Oprah happened to be on the TV and …

Union Jack's in Annapolis Now Open

The casual pub offers a variety of British and American menu items for lunch and dinner.

The wait is finally over for the opening of Union Jack's, the British-style pub and restaurant that replaced Wild Willy's on Somerville Road near Annapolis Towne Centre at Parole. News that Union Jack's was coming to town broke in July 2012. What's on the menu? For starters, you'll find favorites like mini-burgers and a nacho platter along with more unique items like Welsh Rarebit and "London chips and gravy"—thick chips with graisse de canard (duck fat) and rich onion pan gravy. Other tasty-sounding menu items include a variety of salads, sandwiches, pizzas, pasta, entrees and Sunday roasts. Brunch is also served Sundays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Union Jack's also has an extensive selection of beers—plus many wines and specialty drinks. …

The Athletic Annapolitan

Doing the High Heeled Shuffle

Men running through the streets in high heels? All for a good cause.

Reena Parangot stood 100 feet from the finish line waiting for her daughter to cross the line. With her hair just beginning to come back in after chemotherapy, Parangot stood out in the crowd at the Annapolis Towne Centre at Parole on Sunday afternoon. She stood out as a fighter. She is fighting breast cancer and plans to beat it. At Charm City Run’s Healing in Heels 500 Yard Dash, Reena was not alone in her fight. More than 100 runners toed the line in everything from blue gingham wedges to 4 inch bondage pumps all in an effort to fight back against breast cancer. The race, co-hosted by Charm City Run and Save the Coconuts, was to benefit Anne Arundel Medical Center’s Breast Center. Many of the runners at the event had been helped by the …

Scenes from Greater Annapolis

In case you missed it, Patch didn't. Take a look at what was happening around Greater Annapolis in the past week.

Every day there is so much going on in Greater Annapolis and Patch is out there with cameras at the ready to help share just a slice of our local life. Check back each week for a photo gallery of local events, people and places. As much as we hate to admit it, beautiful days with bright blue skies will soon be fading into distant memories. Because of that, we bring you some photos you can cherish come winter when you're bundled up and Hillsmere Beach isn't quite the place to be for man, woman, child or flock of seagulls.  Now for one of the bright sides of fall and winter—we are very happy to report boots are now being worn around Greater Annapolis.  We found a very stylish visitor to Annapolis Towne Centre, sporting some amazing boots. …
