Bates Spelling Champ Places Second in County Bee

Olivia Simmons, an eighth-grader at Wiley H. Bates Middle School, showed her skills at the county spelling bee on Saturday.

The final round of this year's Anne Arundel County Spelling Bee came after a 27-round duel between Severn River Middle student Robin Roper and defending spelling champion Olivia Simmons, who finished second on Saturday. Olivia, an eighth-grader at Bates Middle School, won last year's competition with the word "Damoclean." She also competed this year against her sister, Isabelle, a sixth-grader at Montessori International Children's House. Robin, an eighth-grader, beat out 31 other top spellers with her winning word, "wafflestomper"—a hiking boot with a lug sole. She earned a trip to the national competition later this year after she correctly spelled the word in the 39th round of the competition. Last year's competition ended in round 19. …

Annapolis Students To Compete in Spelling Bee

The winner of Anne Arundel County's 25th annual competition will compete in the 2013 Scripps National Spelling Bee in May.

Will returning county champion Olivia Simmons of Bates Middle School take the prize as the top speller again in Anne Arundel County? She has competition from 31 other students who are prepared to show off their spelling skills at the 25th annual Anne Arundel County Spelling Bee on Feb. 23. Eighteen public school students, 13 private school students, and one home-schooled student will compete to become the county champion, according to a press release from Anne Arundel County Public Schools. The winner will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, DC, to compete in the 2013 Scripps National Spelling Bee from May 28-30. Bates Middle Student Top Speller in County Bee

After going back and forth for nine rounds in the 2012 Anne Arundel Spelling Bee with one other speller, Bates Middle School student Olivia Simmons eventually spelled her way to success. Olivia, who lives in Crofton, walked away with the top spot Saturday afternoon, winning on the word "Damoclean" in Round 19. The word, an adjective, refers to Damocles who, legend has it, spoke in extravagant terms of Dionysius’ happiness and was then invited to a banquet and made to sit underneath a sword suspended by a hair to demonstrate the precarious position of people in power.
