There was a lot riding on 15-minute performances by high school bands as part of the 14th annual Anne Arundel County Battle of the Bands.
Nancy Almgren, founder and organizer of the Anne Arundel County Battle of the Bands, said she loves to see the students of all different musical genres and schools come together every year. "Where else are you going to get kids from every part of the county?" Almgren asked Saturday night during the 14th annual event at Maryland Hall. This year's competition featured students from public and private schools, including Strobe Otters from Annapolis High School, August of One from The Key School and Plan C from Indian Creek High School. Check out this story in The Capital talking to the members of Strobe Otters and their hard work leading up to the show. "Having things for them to do is really significant," Almgren said. The annual competition, now in its 14th year, didn't disappoint with some great music from high school bands from across Anne Arundel County.
The Anne Arundel County Battle of the Bands never fails to surprise and inspire, said founder and organizer Nancy Almgren. Now in its 14th year, the annual show at Maryland Hall may not have attracted as big an audience this year with about 750 tickets sold, but Almgren still counts it as a success. She said in the past it had sold out before the night of the show and that she had sold 1,200 tickets to the show throughout the evening. The show also has been $12 a ticket for many years, Almgren said. Proceeds from the show goes to the music departments of the bands that place in the top four spots, she said. "People have no idea that these kids are this good," Almgren said. "I think it really has helped that The Whiskey is doing all-ages …

Young musicians perform live as part of the Rock of All Ages Concert Series at The Whiskey.
Danny Mays, proprietor of MAYDAN Entertainment, recalls a time when teenage musicians could perform their music. Mays, who also serves as the emcee and marketing director for the Anne Arundel County High School Battle of the Bands, cherishes the memories of playing in a band and hanging out at “Woods”—the name used to refer to the Community Center/Holy Grounds Youth Center in Severna Park back when they ran Friday night teen shows. But as he grew older, those places disappeared. "It's kind of sad," said Mays. "I wanted a place for young bands to play in a safe, secure environment." Mays approached Mike Hearne, owner of The Whiskey, with the idea for Rock of All Ages, a concert for young talent. As a band member in Gold Mind Squad, Mays fit…

The Anne Arundel County High School Battle of the Bands featured local talent, including Annapolis High School's "The Banned."
"We all love music," said David Blackstone, 16, of "The Banned," a group that represented Annapolis High in the Anne Arundel County High School Battle of the Bands on Saturday night. Blackstone, 16, who plays drums, just joined the group about a month ago. He and the other members of "The Banned" are in the school marching band together. Josh Andrucyk, 16, a bassist for the band, said performing in front of a crowd of hundreds at Maryland Hall was probably one of the best things he’s ever experienced. “The Banned" was one of 12 county rock bands chosen to compete in the 13th annual battle. The competition was hosted by Danny Mays, marketing manager of the event and a bassist for Gold Mind Squad. The Maryland State Education Association …
