Cancer Patient Completes 100-Mile Bike Ride

Three days after finishing his third round of chemotherapy, Brian Lewis biked 100 miles to raise money for Team in Training.

On Sept. 20, Greater Annapolis Patch told you about Brian Lewis’s fight against cancer and his quest to complete the Seagull Century only days after completing his third round of chemotherapy. And we would like to congratulate Lewis on doing just that. On Oct. 15, Lewis set out with members of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training for 100 miles through quiet Eastern Shore Roads. With the help of three teammates who blocked the wind for him throughout, Lewis completed the 100-mile ride. “Bar none, it was the hardest thing I have ever done,” Lewis said. “On Wednesday two of my doctors told me not to do it, but I knew I had to. What Motivates an Athlete?

Covering 100 miles on the bike leaves a lot of time for contemplation as athletes draw on personal motivation to keep them going.

Five years ago, my friend Corey Davis decided he wanted to get back into triathlons. Though many of us have made similar decisions after noticing the number on the scale slide up, this was a little different for Corey. His decision came only months after he had come out of a coma and while he was still sitting in a wheelchair. It took Corey three years to meet his goal, but he has since completed three sprint distance triathlons and started setting his goals higher still. In the past several months, Corey and I have worked together towards a couple of his goals.  In June, after months of training, Corey swam his first full mile open water swim at the Chesapeake One Mile Challenge.
