Lines often stretched outside of polling locations as voters huddled together in the chilly November air.
A steady stream of voters flowed through polling places around Annapolis with wait times averaging around 45 minutes on Tuesday. "Usually we get a good crowd at the beginning of the day, and then it slows down and picks back up at the usual times like lunch time and when people get off work," said Bob Bruce, an election judge at the Annapolis Area Library. "[This year] it seems steadier through the day." He and Joe Nasatka, an election judge at the Eastport Community Center, agreed that while most people came prepared for the six-page ballot, it was still taking longer than usual to get through. "Oh, it's incredibly longer because we've got so many questions to answer at the end," Nasatka said. "We could have used two more voting machines…

City officials and Annapolis police officers met with residents for two hours on Tuesday night to talk about the Eastport Community Center.
City officials and about 100 residents spent more than two hours on Tuesday night exchanging facts, opinions and concerns about whether the Eastport Community Center is safe. In September, two men were shot near the community center; and in June, Orlando Sherman McDaniel, 29, of Annapolis died as a result of gunshot wounds he suffered nearby. No arrests have been made in either case. After the double shooting, a group of area residents, led by Steven Conn, started raising concerns with city officials about whether the center—which is a polling location—is a safe place for people to go on Election Day. Mayor Josh Cohen told Patch he thinks the location is secure, and he, along with Aldermen Kenneth Kirby (D-6th Ward) and Ross Arnett (D-8th …

City officials have called a meeting to re-assure residents that the Eastport Community Center is safe after residents raised concerns in the wake of violent incidents. "The decision to hold [the meeting] at the community center was intentional because the community center is safe," Mayor Josh Cohen said. The meeting is in response to a series of complaints made by Ward 6 residents who believe the center is not a safe location for them to vote on Nov. 6. In September, two men were shot near the community center; and in June, Orlando Sherman McDaniel, 29, of Annapolis died as a result of gunshot wounds he suffered in the 1100 block of Madison Street, which is nearby. No arrests have been made in either case, but police believe the September…

Alderman Kenneth Kirby asked council members to consider holding a work session at the Eastport Community Center to show the community they are not afraid of the location.
The Annapolis City Council could soon be gathering at the Eastport Community Center for a work session thanks to a proposal by Alderman Kenneth Kirby (D—6th ward). The alderman suggested the move in response to complaints from people in his ward that the center —which is the polling place for the Nov. 6 election—isn't safe. "There is no place in this city that I feel none of us can walk in," Kirby said. The concerns about the polling location for November's election were raised after a double shooting near the center on Sept. 9. No arrests have been made, but Police Chief Michael Pristoop previously told Patch that the two men were not shot randomly, and he's hopeful that an arrest will be made. As Kirby entered the council meeting last …

The Annapolis Police Department has determined that it will not need extra patrols at the Eastport Community Center on Election Day.
The Annapolis Police Department will not be sending extra officers or patrol cars to an Eastport polling place on Election Day, despite some residents' concerns about violence in the area. "We plan on doing what we usually do," said Detective Amy Miguez, a police spokeswoman. "We pay special attention to all the polling places throughout the day, but we don't have any plans to focus on any place in particular." Some Eastport residents say they are worried about the safety of their polling location after two shootings have occurred near the Eastport Community Center.
Some Annapolis residents say that after two shootings near their polling place at the Eastport Community Center, they may decide to stay home on Election Day. "I feel that it is unfairly putting our representation in a gerry-mandered position because a lot of those people feel very safe, but a lot of other people won't venture over there at all," Steven Conn said. "We don't want it to be moved. We understand that there are people there with limited mobility, but give us an alternative." On Sunday night, two men were shot near the community center, and in June, Orlando Sherman McDaniel, 29, of Annapolis died as a result of gunshots wounds he suffered near the 1100 block of Madison Street, which is nearby. Hahaha, "Thought he had a consensus?" My neighbors and I certainly weren't asked. It's easy to have a consensus when you only ask certain people... Remember that "transparency" promise you campaigned with? Secret meetings where too many Aldermen and Women are in attendance (last night - causing the meeting to be illegal since it wasn't announced to the public)? Consensus? In fact, the mayor …   more ›
