Residents Push for Eastport Elementary School Expansion

The school's teachers, parents and students say overcrowding is negatively impacting the children's capacity to learn.

About two dozen people lobbied Anne Arundel County's school board to consider expanding Eastport Elementary at its second public hearing about the capital budget for 2014. Superintendent Kevin Maxwell's proposed budget includes a $1.01 billion operating budget and $240 million capital budget. It does not include any money for the 103-year-old school to expand. "We've grown significantly faster than anyone could have ever dreamed," said Sarah Robertson, a teacher at the school. She said the school is already at 104 percent capacity and projected a capacity of 113 percent by 2015. Bob Mosier, a spokesman for county schools, disagreed. Schedule Set for Eastport Green Beer Races

The annual event at the Eastport Democratic Club will raise money for Eastport Elementary School.

It’s time to start getting ready for the annual Green Beer Races at the Eastport Democratic Club. This year’s event is set for noon-8 p.m. March 10. The races have grown into a daylong party with relay races for teams representing Annapolis bars and restaurants, Kool-Aid races for the kids, a keg toss, food and live music. The main event features racers carrying green beer on trays along a course as quickly as they can. Prizes also will be awarded for the Best Dressed Dog and the Cutest Leprechaun. A portion of the money raised at the event will be donated to Eastport Elementary School, according to a release.
