Hillsmere Principal Takes First Day to New Heights
Hillsmere Elementary welcomed nearly 500 students on Tuesday with high hopes of higher test scores and a successful school year.
Hillsmere Elementary School Principal Mary Wagner greeted students from the rooftop Tuesday morning, a grand gesture to mark the first day of the 2011-12 school year. “I wanted to make sure I could see everyone!” she said with a laugh after climbing down. Students gathered on the school’s front lawn, grouped by grade, before the doors opened. Wagner said this was planned to allow students to visit with their friends before entering the building. Shortly after 8:40 a.m., the doors opened and students were led in by class. “It was very organized,” said Lori Kavle, parent of a Hillsmere fourth grade student. “It also gave the kids and parents time to hang out and catch up.” Enrollment at Hillsmere this year is up to 491 students, counting two…
