The Psychology of Gift Giving

Anne Arundel Community College professor Matt Patton explains why we feel the way we do about presents.

Exchanging gifts is a major part of celebrating the holiday season, but it can also be the source of major stress. Annapolis Patch spoke with Matt Patton, an Annapolis resident and psychology professor at Anne Arundel Community College, about the social science behind gift giving. It's the thought that counts An expensive gadget like an iPad or new cellphone may make a person jump for joy on Christmas morning, but Patton said that high wears off quick. Everyone has an emotional baseline or "set point." While we can feel happier or sadder in the short-term, Patton said most people return to their baseline within a few weeks. Midshipmen Donate Toys For 700 Annapolis Children

The U.S. Naval Academy's 22nd annual giving tree program kicked off Tuesday.

Students at the U.S. Naval Academy circled a Christmas tree in Bancroft Hall on Tuesday glancing at hundreds of ornaments—each one stating the name, gender, age, and suggested gifts for a local child in need. Midshipman First Class George Bowman laughed as he plucked an ornament off the tree. "He just likes a lot of the same things I like," Bowman said. "I used to play with Legos all the time." Bowman said each year he takes two kids from the academy's annual giving tree, which is a collaboration between the school and the Salvation Army of Annapolis. "I have two siblings, and I feel like one isn't enough," Bowman said. "I'm going to hook these two kids up because they remind me of myself a bit." Each ornament contains three to four gifts …
