Annapolis Schools Announce Back-To-School Nights

Anne Arundel County public school system has announced when it will host Back-To-School Nights.

Sharpen your pencils, scope out deals on calculators and brush the dust off your backpack—it is already time to start talking about going back to school. Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) has announced the schedule for Back-To-School Night. More than 77,000 students are expected to enter AACPS classrooms this fall, and Back-To-School Nights provide parents with the opportunity to learn more about their child’s teachers, and the instruction their children are receiving, according to a press release from AACPS spokesman Bob Mosier. “Helping our children achieve success is a team effort that requires parents to be involved in the educational process,” schools Superintendent Kevin Maxwell said in the release. “Back-To-School Night …

Annapolis Area Students Tops in Pinewood Derby

A Hillsmere Elementary student takes first place in the annual Capital District Pinewood Derby Competition this past weekend.

Three Annapolis area students raced to top spots in the 2012 Capital District Pinewood Derby Competition. The event, held this past weekend at Westfield Annapolis mall, was open to all Cub Scouts from each pack in the district, according to a release. Hillsmere Elementary third-grader Nathan Lynch of Black Walnut Cove walked away with first place. He is a part of Pack 366 at Calvary United Methodist Church in Annapolis, said his mother Kathi Lynch in an email. Also earning top spots were: Kathi Lynch said it was a challenging road to victory: Nathan first participated in our Pack 366 Pinewood Derby race on January 28, 2012.  A few days before the January race he used a hammer to tweak his wheel alignment and broke an entire front chunk of …

Hillsmere Elementary Students Write Letters to the Troops

Read what the third-grade students had to say about their project in their own words.

Lisa Ferrer's third grade class at Hillsmere Elementary School recently wrote letters and made holiday cards for the troops overseas. Their work was part of a class project started by one of the students. Better than me telling you about it, Ferrer helped her students share their own story with Patch. Here's the story as related by students Riley Saylor, Olivia DiGuardo, Joshua McDaniel, and Emma Reed: Our adventure at Hillsmere Elementary School started with a simple letter from Riley Saylor persuading Ms. Ferrer’s third grade class to create holiday cards for military overseas. With the help from three other classmates from military families, Joshua McDaniel, Emma Reed and Olivia DiGuardo, we created a plan to write letters, make holiday…

Tasting of the Reds at Hillsmere Elementary

School officials encourage healthy eating habits by focusing on foods of a specific color and learning about different types of healthy options.

Beth Oldfield from Hillsmere Elementary recently held a fun program at the school and was kind enough to share some information about its attempts to encourage students to eat healthier. The idea was to focus on a single color—in this case red—and to highlight healthy foods fitting that description. She provided Patch with some photos of the event and how everything went: "We had great feedback from the kids—they wanted to know if we're doing it again soon and I had a number of them ask what the next color we'll be tasting will be. We had a great team effort with prepping the fruits and veggies on Thursday and Friday and had another team show up to serve the 480 students at lunch time. The Health Department helps to provide the …

Hillsmere Elementary Fun Fair Combines Tradition with Flash

This year’s fair is dedicated to the memory of Jennifer Barrett, Hillsmere PTA president who passed away in July.

In days gone by, a traditional elementary school carnival might offer games like ring toss or a fishing pond, with a big cake walk finale. Today’s school fun fairs blend the traditional with a bit of flash to bring in the crowds and raise money for Parent-Teacher Association-sponsored programs, making them vitally important supplements to shrinking education funding. At the Hillsmere Elementary Fun Fair from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, you’ll find familiar carnival-style games and, yes, even a cake walk.   But you’ll also find a silent auction boasting hundreds of donated items, such as a time share in Belize and Taylor Swift swag. You can peruse the book fair, enter a raffle for an iPad 2 or Nintendo 3DS, and eat food provided by Davis’ …

Police Investigating Suspicious Person Near Hillsmere Bus Stop, One of Two Incidents

Incidents on Hillsmere Drive and at Sylvan Shores in Riva prompt county police to remind parents of "stranger danger."

Anne Arundel County Police are asking the public to be vigilant in protecting children at bus stops after two "suspicious persons" reports on Tuesday, one in Hillsmere and one in Riva. In Hillsmere, police were called after a 13-year-old girl said she saw a suspicious person hanging around the bus stop at Hillsmere Drive and Quiet Waters Park at about 6:30 a.m. The girl said an Hispanic man was in the bushes and appeared to be watching students, although he didn't talk to anyone. The incident is being investigated by southern district detectives. In the incident in Riva's Sylvan Shores neighborhood, an 11-year-old girl got off the bus at Riva Road and Centre Road at 3:20 p.m. She was walking and turned around to find a white minivan …
