Be Prepared: List of Important Phone Numbers, Information

Print out this guide with phone numbers and other information for Anne Arundel County residents before the next storm.

Tropical Storm Irene was not as strong as some thought it would be in our area, but it still caused power outages and problems with downed trees across Anne Arundel County. And the effects of the derecho—and the power outages that followed—are still fresh in the minds of some local residents. Both storms serve as a reminder to be prepared and have emergency and other useful information at the ready. Patch has created a short, printer-friendly guide for Anne Arundel County residents with phone numbers and websites to help get started and handle electric outages, water emergencies, communications (phone, cable and web) outages and more. Click on the PDF (right) to access it. Print it out, review it and add it to your emergency kit before you…

BGE: Restoring Power Not an Easy Job

BGE offers a demonstration on just how difficult it is for utility workers to repair downed lines and get power restored following a major storm.

At the peak of Hurricane Irene last August, more than 800,000 homes in Maryland were without power. A majority of BGE’s 3,400 employees, along with about 1,000 from out-of-state, worked around the clock for more than a week to restore all of the power. Many customers were patient, while many others grew frustrated after living in the dark for days with no electricity. Veteran BGE workers like Gordon Johnson understood that frustration—he has seen his fair share of hurricanes and blizzards during his 30-year career with the utility company. But he also wants customers to know that restoring power is often not as simple as patching a wire or flipping a switch. “You’re out there in all the elements and what we’re often dealing with is …

O'Malley, Local Politicians Tour Storm Damage in Bay Ridge

The governor visited various sites around the region Wednesday morning to get a firsthand look at damage from Irene as the state continues with cleanup efforts.

Gov. Martin O'Malley spent about half an hour in Bay Ridge late Wednesday morning checking out the damage left in the wake of Tropical Storm Irene. Flanked by County Councilman Chris Trumbauer, D-District 6, Anne Arundel County Executive John R. Leopold and Speaker of the House Michael E. Busch, O'Malley saw several homes that had suffered severe damage during the storm mostly from falling trees. And these weren't just any trees. They were large, old trees. At one time O'Malley stood next to the upended root system of a massive tree that towered over him. "I wanted to come here to Bay Ridge to see the damage," O'Malley said. "It was one of the hardest hit areas during the storm." He toured the home of Jose and Sandra Torano on East Lake …

The Race Must Go On

Local runners rally after the cancellation of the Annapolis Ten Miler.

The weather for the Annapolis Ten Miler is always atrocious. It is hot, humid and best described as just plain miserable. But runners expect that and they register months in advance any way. Because of its popularity, the race has reached the same status as many of the bigger marathons the world over, closing registration within hours of opening. So, on Wednesday afternoon, when registrants received notice the race would go on, rain or shine, there was less a sign of relief and more a shrug of, “well, of course.” It wasn’t until Thursday when Annapolis City Emergency Management canceled the race for the first time in its 36-year history that there was any shock.  Within minutes of the announcement messages were flying across Twitter, …

Local Residents Clean Up After Irene

Gloomy Skies Give Way to Sun and Blue Skies

Stormy skies during the first part of the weekend gave way to sunshine and blue views overhead by Sunday afternoon in Annapolis. Residents of Eastport spent Sunday picking up leaves and sticks, running generators and walking in the sun following the high winds and rain produced by Hurricane Irene.

The county is closing the Annapolis High School shelter at 6 p.m., as most county residents who took refuge there during Hurricane Irene are back in their homes, according to a county news release. Residents who still need shelter or assistance should go to district police stations, which are equipped with cots and water. Road closures Across the county, road closures have decreased from 213 after the storm hit to 151. The Emergency Operations Center will remain partially activated until 5 p.m. Monday. County Schools Closed on Monday

Students get another day off as the county recovers from Irene.

Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) will be closed Monday, according to an announcement on the county's Office of Emergency Management's Facebook page. Further information was released from AACPS stating that the closure is due to continued widespread power outages and transportation issues. Among the outages is the school system's headquarters building on Riva Road in Annapolis, so the AACPS website is currently inaccessible. Further information will be passed through local media outlets and additional phone messages. Patch will update as more information becomes available.

City Fire Department Stays Busy During Storm

City bus service has resumed; Severn and Naval Academy Bridges have reopened.

Members of the Annapolis Fire Department (AFD) responded to 82 calls for service between noon Saturday and 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Battalion Chief John Menassa, an AFD spokesman said. Among those, 15 were emergency medical service calls, but Menassa said none of the medical emergencies were related to the storm. As of 10:30 a.m., Menassa reported 24 electrical wires were down, eight calls for flooded basements and nine emergency calls related to trees falling on buildings. He said none of the trees that fell on buildings resulted in injuries. The Naval Academy/Route 450 bridge and the Severn River Bridge on Route 50 closed overnight due to high winds, but reopened Sunday morning, Menassa said. In addition, city transit resumed at 7:30 a.m. …

Annapolis High School Shelters 70 People, 8 Dogs and 2 Cats at Height of Irene

Homeless among those most appreciative.

Annapolis High School opened as a shelter at 1 p.m. Saturday—three hours ahead of schedule. Hurricane Irene descended on the area, knocking out power for many residents well before the worst of the storm. "Last night at the height, we had 70 people," said Steve Thompson, Batallion Chief of the Anne Arundel County Fire Department. "We also had a pet shelter there. We sheltered eight dogs and two cats." This morning when Patch visited there were only about 10 people still in the shelter, a few of whom had no other place to go. Maura Doucett is homeless. She had been in the woods in Glen Burnie, when she decided she couldn't take the pounding rain and relentless winds any longer. "I was so soaked," she said. "I had called the Anne Arundel …
